Pro Tip: The clutch master cylinder for the RHD BJ70, BJ71, BJ73, BJ74 is Obsolete! (as of 2009)

For BJ70, BJ71, BJ73 & BJ74 owners: This part can be used to replace worn out clutch master cylinder units on the vacuum boosted BJ70, BJ71, BJ73, BJ74 Series RHDs, where the booster mounts behind the firewall, as the clutch masters for those units are no longer in production and rebuild kits often do not work at all with worn or pitted bores.

Notes: When retro-fitting this part on earlier models (BJ73, BJ74), the heat shield and fluid tube need to be located a bit differently, however the bolt-up and function of this cylinder works perfectly in these applications.

  • There is no provision to mount the heat shield on the new master cylinder; you will have to figure out a simple work around.
  • The fluid outlet port is also 90* out of rotation when compared to the BJ part - these two 'issues' are both easily modified to work.

Pro Tip 2: For all applications, ensure the push rod lengths are both set according to the Factory Service Manual specifications. Numerous clutch function problems can be pointed back to not setting the booster push rod length properly after installation of a new master cylinder.

Note 2: you should consider replacing the slave cylinder at the same time.
The HZJ & PZJ part number is: 31470-60161
The BJ70, BJ71, BJ73 & BJ74 part number is: 31470-60120

Note 3: It's good practice to completely flush your brake and clutch fluid every one or two years depending on how wet your environment is. Brake fluid attracts moisture over time, then drops out of suspension and will internally corrode brake tubes, wheel cylinders, calipers, slave cylinders.
