The front axle shafts are commonly replaced in full time 4WD vehicles when the seal surface on the outer portion of the shaft is worn and grease and oil are trading places within the axle housing.

Note that it's really important to also consider replacing your spindle bushings when you are having trouble with grease or oil migration in the axle and knuckle housing.

The spindle bushings keep the birfield CV axle running true, and when the bushings are worn the axle shaft can great a gap at the inner axle seal which leads to, usually, oil getting into the knuckle housing which leads to liquefaction of the grease and then a great big greasy mess at the knuckle ball, or oil running off the knuckle and onto your wheel and tire.
